And another thing: Honda motorcycle worldwide sales in 2007: 13,500,000 units Harley motorcycle worldwide sales in 2007: 331,000 units king of the roost, you say?

Spoken like a true believer. If you listen to yourself, your arguments condemn the Motor company, but you speak them and believe in them as though they are positive. Like the peasant in rags who puts their food money into the collection plate at church to serve "God", the true believers pony up their hard-earned cash, getting the absolute least value for their dollar, heads piously bowed to serve the "lifestyle"...

RE: 2009 Victorys

Victory is built in the USA Buell is built in the USA Fisher is built in the USA MotoCzyz is built in the USA Honda Goldwings are built in the USA Innovation and leading-edge technology are the hallmarks of this great nation of ours. HD just isn't interested in being one of those companies, or rather they choose to let Buell be that side of the equation, but don't really support them them with advertising, higher R&D budgets, decent dealership experience, etc. I've said this a thousand times: If Triumph can build the Speed Triple-R, Daytona 675 AND the Bonneville, why can't HD do the same? If Ducati can build the Desmosedici AND the Sport 1000S, why can't HD do the same? If BMW can build the R1200GS AND the K1200S, why can't HD do the same? Nostalgic, low-tech bikes and bleeding-edge high-tech bikes exist in the portfolio of every major manufacturer of motorcycles, except HD. Even Victory (to get it back to the thread) has realized the importance of this in their Vision. It is light-years ahead of the Electra-Glide, even with the E-G's new frame for '09. The answer to these questions is that HD can do this, but it doesn't want to do this and chooses not to, at its long-term peril. The Sportster, when it was introduced, was THE sportbike of its day, rivaled by none. Imagine how cool it would be if HD had chosen to keep it that way, year after year, meeting and beating back every challenge from Italy, Britain, Germany and Japan to keep it the best. How wonderful it would have been if the Big Twins had remained the nostalgia line, and the Sportsters were the dedicated performance line. A 2008 Sportster, with 50 years of passionate technological innovation applied to it, would be a liquid-cooled, V-Twin or V-4, say 175 HP or so, with slick body work, laser handling and all the good stuff like Brembo, Ohlins, etc. Imagine if MotoGP and World Superbike were dominated by the Harley-Davidson Sportster-R (racing version). Imagine the Ducati 1098 or the Aprilia RSV 1000 as the current street Sportster, offered right alongside the Springers and the Street Glides. Now THAT would be an HD I'd be proud of... Greenman.

RE: 2009 Victorys

By every objective measure, a Harley is an inferior motorcycle. A HD V-Twin requires thousands of dollars of modifications in order to just get up to the horsepower and torque that a Victory provides out of the box. A Yamaha V-Max gives 120 MORE horsepower and significantly better handling than any Harley for the same money. Yes, the cruiser portion of the Japanese marques' lineup has copied the style of HD for some of their bikes. But every one of those bikes is superior in performance and build quality to the Harley offering and costs a small fraction. Then again, each of those manufacturers has sport, sport-touring, dual sport and off-road offerings that Harley couldn't hope to produce. Is that not style, presence and heritage as well? Are you suggesting that Triumph and Ducati and BMW are lacking in style, presence and heritage? What separates Harley from the rest is that when you buy a Harley, you pay the most money for the least performance. Listening to a lot of HD riders is like listening to an evangelical. Both make ridiculous, outrageous claims of superiority that have no sense of reality or evidentiary basis for those claims. If you want to ride a Harley because you like it, go to town and enjoy. But do not suggest for a second that they are the best at anything, other than in marketing to the masses. TheBURN was right, though, this was a thread about Victory motorcycles. And, although I personally wouldn't purchase one because they don't make the kind of bike I want nowadays, they are showing the world that you can be American, original AND offer the customer increased performance at a (relatively) decent price.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

Hey now, The truck project is slow but good. I'm in the middle of rewiring the entire truck; the wires themselves are fine, but the old '60's insulation decays and you end up with shorts and fires. So, rewiring is a pain but it's ultimately cheap insurance. I also picked up a billet HEI distributor and an alternator to make things more reliable. I hope to start her up soon. On the bike front, I'm not sure, but the FJR1300A (the "shift-it-yourself" version, of course), the Ulysses, and the F800GS are on the radar. After I win the lottery, I'd like to add the CrossBones (hate the name, like the bike) to the stable. If you have an extra 20G's laying around that you don't know what to do with, let me know... How about you? What have you been up to? Greenman.
